Code of Conduct, Policies, and Procedures

Fortress Volleyball Club – Player Code of Conduct

Fortress Volleyball Club is committed to providing a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive environment for athletes, parents, coaches, and volunteers. To support this vision, all athletes are expected to uphold the following standards of conduct.

As a Fortress athlete, I will:

1. Bring a Positive Attitude – Arrive at practices and games ready to give my best effort, learn new skills, and receive feedback to grow as an athlete.

2. Show Respect – Greet coaches and teammates when arriving/leaving practices, games, and events. Treat teammates, coaches, officials, opponents, parents, and spectators with courtesy at all times—on and off the court.

3. Support My Team – Work hard for myself, my teammates, and my coaches. Encourage and celebrate both my own growth and the growth of others.

4. Promote a Healthy Team Culture – Be intentional, kind, and inclusive. Gossip, bullying, social exclusion, or negative talk will not be tolerated. If negative behavior occurs, I will communicate with my coach, captain, or leadership team.

5. Demonstrate Sportsmanship – Act with dignity before, during, and after games. Represent Fortress Volleyball Club and the sport with pride.

6. Use Communication Wisely – Keep all communication—verbal, text, email, and social media—respectful and positive. Avoid negativity that could harm team unity.

7. Respect Facilities – Care for all gyms and venues we use. Keep areas clean, follow all rules, and avoid vandalism or theft. I will be responsible for costs associated with theft or vandalism that occurs.

8. Follow Health & Safety Rules – No alcohol, tobacco, vaping, or illegal drugs at any practices, tournaments, or team functions. (Prescription or over-the-counter medications may be used with parent approval.) Any use will follow an immediate suspension with Fortress Volleyball Club.

9. Use Phones Appropriately – No phone or airpod use during practices, games, or team time without coach permission. Weekend/Tournament event phone rules will be set by the coach.

10. Be Reliable – Attend practices, games, and team events on time. Notify coaches in advance if I cannot attend, and explain why. Inform coaches about any injuries or issues affecting participation.

11. Follow Social Media Guidelines – Abide by Volleyball Alberta and Fortress Volleyball Club social media policies. Social media posts should reflect positively on both Volleyball Alberta, as well as Fortress Volleyball Club.

12. Follow Volleyball Alberta’s Guidelines – Abide by Volleyball Alberta’s policies and procedures, as listed on our website, as well as Volleyball Alberta’s website.

Fortress Volleyball Club – Parent Code of Conduct

Parents play a vital role in shaping their child’s experience in sport. By helping create a positive learning environment, parents contribute to athletes developing teamwork, self-worth, sportsmanship, and leadership. Your words and actions influence not only your child, but also teammates, other parents, and the overall culture of the club.

We ask all parents to uphold the following standards:

1. Promote a Positive Team Culture – Cheer for and encourage all athletes, not just your own. Support inclusion, kindness, and respect at all times.

2. Show Respect – Interact positively with coaches, officials, Volleyball Alberta staff, athletes, parents, and spectators. Avoid gossip, negativity, or behavior that could harm team unity.

3. Model Good Sportsmanship – Display respect before, during, and after games. Avoid questioning officials’ or coaches’ decisions publicly.

4. Trust the Coaches – Understand that coaches are responsible for practice plans, game strategies, and playing decisions. Athletes should receive instruction only from coaches during games.

5. Use Communication Wisely – Address concerns through the appropriate channels. If upset, observe a 24-hour “cooling-off” period before speaking to the coach in person. Avoid email, text, or messaging for emotional matters. Athletes aged 14U and up are encouraged to speak with the coach directly first.

6. Be a Role Model – Refrain from using alcohol or drugs at athletic events or facilities. When alcohol is permitted at licensed venues, use responsibly.

7. Support the Team – Ensure your athlete has reliable transportation to and from all team activities. Volunteer when possible for team needs (e.g., managing, fundraising, scorekeeping, food coordination).

8. Respect Facilities – Keep all venues clean and follow their rules. Vandalism or theft will not be tolerated.

9. Encourage Athlete Growth – Remind your child of what they did well, and that effort and learning are just as important as winning.

10. Report Issues – Inform coaches about injuries or other circumstances affecting your child’s ability to participate.

11. Follow Volleyball Alberta’s Guidelines – Abide by Volleyball Alberta’s policies and procedures, as listed on our website, as well as Volleyball Alberta’s website.

12. Zero Tolerance Policy for Violence, Harassment, and Bullying – Any athlete, parent, or guardian who engages in violence, harassment, bullying—whether in person, online, or through social media toward any Fortress Volleyball member(s) (including athletes, parents, coaches, and board members) or other members of the community may face serious consequences. Such inappropriate behavior may result in immediate removal from the team without refund of fees.
